9 Things To Remember About Chamber Membership Recruitment In Good Times And Bad

No doubt it has been a tough year for chambers and their members. Certainly it has been disheartening and frustrating for you to watch your members struggle, as well as experience uncertainty about your organization’s bottom line.

We’ve found that whether you are experiencing tough times or cruising on easy street, it’s important to keep things in perspective. So as this “heck of a year” winds down, we wanted to share with you nine things to remember in good times and bad.

* Membership recruiting isn’t about getting others to do something they don’t want to do or to buy something they don’t need.  It’s about making the perfect match between what your chamber has to offer and what business leaders need or want to support.

* You must build strong relationships with prospective members.  Business leaders are far more likely to join when interacting with member services consultants who make them comfortable - someone they respect and trust.  Make sure you are that person.

* Business leaders won’t support your chamber because YOU have needs; they invest when you meet THEIR needs.

* Ask more questions.  When you understand prospective members’ needs, you can help resolve their problem(s) and earn their membership investment.

* Of course, you want to engage the largest companies in your region, but don’t lose sight of the thousands of other businesses that will gain an advantage from your chamber’s services and resources.

* Business leaders won’t merely subsidize your chamber’s operation; they invest in the mission your organization serves.

* Members and companies don’t care about your organizational challenges.  They care about how what your chamber offers impacts their needs, wants and concerns for their business and the community.

* Build member allegiance and trust with ongoing communication.  Commit to sending thank you notes, progress reports and success stories.

* Your mission is important.  Be proud of the work you do to help prospective members gain an advantage through chamber membership.
