The Time Is Now To Implement A Consistent Membership Recruiting Process

If you’ve been following our posts for any length of time, you know that we believe a successful member recruiting strategy begins with a consistent and repeatable process that is easily understood across a chamber’s entire membership team.

Here are a few things to consider when developing a standardized membership recruiting strategy for your chamber.

TAKE IT STEP BY STEP

Your chamber’s membership recruiting process should include a step-by-step, pre-defined set of linked interactions to identify, qualify and recruit prospective members. For example, your plan might include instructions on how to prospect, the types of questions to ask, how to prepare a proposal, etc.

Developing easy-to-follow, step-by-step plans with explicit objectives for each stage of the recruiting process will result in a better prepared and ultimately better producing membership team.

ELIMINATE DISCONNECT BETWEEN LEADERSHIP & MEMBERSHIP REPS

Everyone with a stake in your chamber’s membership recruitment performance needs to have a shared vision and understanding of how your membership recruitment process works.

Member services consultants and chamber leadership should utilize the same vocabulary and understand that recruiting opportunities are not just single transactions, but part of a process comprised of sequential stages with linked steps that must be completed to guide prospective members through the recruiting cycle.

DON'T RUSH IT

Establish guidelines of what it takes to move from one stage of the recruiting progression to the next. Make sure your reps (and management) understand why each step is essential to the process.

Member services consultants that shoot from the hip instead of following a system need to “reinvent the wheel” with every attempt. Consistently applying a standardized process minimizes confusion and reduces the amount of time spent trying to figure things out on the fly. It also gives leadership the ability to diagnose recruitment challenges quickly and provide assistance to member reps who get stuck.
